The Bridge: SIGGRAPH 96 Art Show was a primarily thematic and conceptual show. It was a daring attempt to set new precedents for art at SIGGRAPH.
The idea behind a curated rather than juried show was to bring together a more cohesive, purposeful exhibition than in previous SIGGRAPH conferences. In the past, when artists were seduced by new, cutting-edge technology, the art was more about the technology than the art. The curators of The Bridge went beyond the seduction of high technology to invite artists whose work has a more profound meaning or contribution to social issues. Many of the installations were intellectually stimulating and provocative. They may have raised more questions than answers, but they were meant to heighten awareness and initiate discussion about current issues.
Technically, The Bridge was the Internet connection between the two separate sites of the show, the Contemporary Arts Center and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Conceptually, however, The Bridge was a metaphor for connecting current issues, bringing together art and technology, spanning gaps between social issues: race, gender, religion, culture, and high art. The Bridge also brought together various audiences, international as well as domestic. There were 36 installations, many of which utilized the two sites and the Internet connection between them. Most importantly, the artists worked the theme of The Bridge into their written statements, which are published in the Visual Proceedings. Their images are published in the SIGGRAPH 96 Art Slide Set.
